Photo study. I wanted to push it a little more realistic this time around, but still retain a bit of that painterly quality.

Noodling! One of those 'started with some blobs of color and worked it until it was interesting' pieces.

Sunday, August 19, 2012

Some fun practice! I did a gray-scale study then colored it with an overlay layer.

Finely got around to rendering this character out! Based on some awesome conceptart by Blizzard. 10,541 tris 2048 Diffuse.

Working on 3d again. This is was a head study in Zbrush that I ended up creating a low poly for. The image is just a grab from my 3ds Max viewport.

I started playing Trine 2 the other day and was really blown away with their environments and lighting. After about thirty minutes of playing I had to paint this. The main point I was focusing on throughout the painting was the transition from warm the cool.

A quick Study of a picture I took overlooking my house last time I visited Hawaii. Although there is no interesting subject matter to focus on in the picture I tried to create a general focal point using lighting and blurring techniques.

A study, I am really focusing on my rendering style and process. On this piece I started with really soft forms for my medium and dark values, then detailed with a nice sharp square brush for the lights.

This image came along way from where it started. Initially I laid down 2 photos of trees and rocks, overlayed them, then started to pull out shapes from it. The image really did not start to take shape until about half way through.

This is the first time working like this and I really like the process so far. It really helps get started, Although I feel like i did waste a bit of time trying to figure out the image for the first half.

Just some sketching, I just started laying down colors and shapes and this is what happened.

The last image for my set of 3 characters. I think I have learned the most from this last one, and have really begun to grasp the harder brush rendering style.

Second portrait for a side project I'm working on.

Sunday, March 25, 2012

This is part of a set of 3 character I am creating for a friend's project. I am really trying to work on making my shapes more interesting and to render with hard brushes instead of soft.

Got to play some Mass Effect 3 last night then got inspired to do a little of this!

Here are some assets and textures I did for an Arabian themed level for Dungeon Defenders.

I really wanted to create a Draenei character from Warcraft that fit in more with the current generation of graphics, while still keeping some of the painterly and toony charm that Warcraft is known for. For her costume I wanted it to have large bold details with a hint of intricacy and a limited color pallet.

Next time I would like to exaggerate the shapes much more as well as push the painterly texture work further.

Highpoly bases were started in 3DS Max then sculpted in ZBrush and baked in XNormal. The image is a Viewport grab in 3DS Max using the Xoliul Shader 2 with Diffuse, Normal and Spec maps applied.

Rigged and posed by Alex Fundora.

This was done for a friend and co worker, he wanted a fun character concept for a 3d model he is going to do. I really enjoyed creating the background for this one, I'd like to push this style further!

More learning fun! I'm really trying to create more interesting lighting setups and in general figure out what makes an image pop.
